Hunter Douglas window shades at Costco
The designer came by, measured the windows, and showed up her sample book. She also had a price list. The price list was quite complicated, and when I looked at it I saw prices for Costco, Home Depot, and a department store (I think it was Nordstrom's, but it may have been Bloomingdale's or Macy's). I asked her about that and she says she gets referrals from all three stores, but that when she prices Hunter Douglas window shades, she has to adjust the price based on where the referral came from. Costco has the lowest prices, then the department store, and Home Depot has the most expensive. We picked the shades and placed our order for four of the windows, then waited. (We decided to do the fifth window, with cheap blinds from Lowe's. We went there, bought it that day, and installed it in 15 minutes the next day. It cost about 50% of the Hunter Douglass version.) A few days later an installer called, and came by to measure the windows. (The installer was a guy about 55-60, and he told me that he was going to be a grandfather in a few months.) Apparently they don't trust the designer's measurements. After another long wait, maybe a month, the installer called back and set up an appointment to actually install the shades. He came, along with his helper and put the shades up. (The installer mentioned that he was going to be a grandfather soon.) One of the four shades was completely wrong, just not what we ordered. We called costco.com and they put in a change order without much hassle. We were told to wait a few weeks and the installer would come by and put it up. A few weeks later, he came, mentioning that he was going to be a grandfather any day now, and installed the shade. This one was defective. It was supposed to be light-blocking, they use a aluminum foil like coating inside the shade to block all light. Part of the shade was just missing the light-blocking material. The installer noticed it. He took a photo of the defect, and said he would let Hunter Douglass know of the problem that evening when he submits his report. A month later, the installer made an appointment to install the shade. He came by and told me all about his new granddaughter while he removed the defective one and put up the correct one. I asked him what happens to the shades he removes (incorrect order, or defective) and he said that he is supposed to destroy them, but sometimes they end up at the flea market/ swap meet. Conclusion If you really want Hunter Douglass window coverings, Costco has the best prices and great service. If we had to do it again, we would probably go with the cheaper shades at Lowe's or Home Depot. |
